I graduated in Chemical Engineering from Institute of Technology Bandung, Indonesia in 1983. Not long after the graduation, I was hired as a project engineer at PT Duma Na Napu and PT Curah Niaga International in Jakarta. It was a private company run by Soy Martua Pardede (Economist). He was expanding his business from export/import of fertilizer products to a manufacturing business. We are building a phthalic anhydride complex at Gresik, East Java. The company later called PT Petrowidada, a joint venture with  PT Petrokimia Gresik and Daewoo Corporation (Korean).

Saya lulus Teknik Kimia dari Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia pada tahun 1983. Tidak lama setelah lulus, saya bekerja sebagai insinyur proyek di PT Duma Na Napu dan PT Curah Niaga Internasional di Jakarta. Itu adalah perusahaan swasta yang dijalankan oleh Soy Martua Pardede (seorang Ekonom). Dia memperluas bisnisnya dari ekspor / impor pupuk ke bisnis manufaktur. Kami sedang membangun kompleks phtalic anhidrida di Gresik, Jawa Timur. Perusahaan itu kemudian diberi nama PT Petrowidada, perusahaan patungan PT Petrokimia Gresik dan Daewoo Corporation (Korea).

Only a few months I worked here when I decided to quit, trying to join a more established company. I sent 100 application letters across the country mostly to chemical plants. Meanwhile, I came across a job adversitement from a gas plant and a petrochemical plant. I submitted my applications to these two companies, i.e: PT Badak NGL an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) manufacturing company and PT Petrokimia Gresik (petrochemical complex). Both accepted my application, but I decided to choose PT Badak NGL simply because of shorter probation period (3 months only).

Hanya beberapa bulan saya bekerja di sini kemudian saya memutuskan untuk berhenti, mencoba bergabung dengan perusahaan yang lebih mapan. Saya mengirim 100 surat lamaran ke seluruh negeri. Kebanyakan ke pabrik kimia. Sementara itu, saya menemukan iklan lowongan kerja di pabrik gas dan pabrik petrokimia. Saya mengajukan lamaran saya ke dua perusahaan ini, yaitu: PT Badak NGL sebuah perusahaan manufaktur LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) dan PT Petrokimia Gresik (kompleks petrokimia). Keduanya menerima lamaran saya, tetapi saya memutuskan untuk memilih PT Badak NGL karena masa percobaan lebih pendek (hanya 3 bulan).

My first days of working were not easy since we only given one task, i.e: study. I and other young engineers must study the manual book, operating manuals, PFD’s, P&ID’s, mass and energy balances. It is hard not to fall asleep when you are only reading the books. Fortunately, we also doing field walk downs for familiarization. We presented our findings to senior engineers on weekly basis. This was really helpful in accelerating our study and improved our knowledge of process plant.

Hari-hari pertama saya bekerja tidak mudah karena kami hanya diberi satu tugas, yaitu: belajar. Saya dan insinyur muda lainnya harus mempelajari buku manual, manual pengoperasian, PFD, P & ID, keseimbangan massa dan energi. Sulit untuk tidak tertidur ketika Anda hanya membaca buku. Untungnya, kami juga melakukan kunjungan lapangan untuk pengenalan. Kami mempresentasikan temuan kami kepada insinyur senior setiap minggu. Ini sangat membantu dalam mempercepat studi kami dan meningkatkan pengetahuan kami tentang pabrik.

I tried hard to apply my knowledge which I got from the university to daily work assignments. I developed a computerized program to calculate compressor performance and efficiency. I used Turbo Pascal which was famous at that time. I also used spreadsheet to do the same calculation. I used Lotus 123 and then changed it to Excel a few years later.​

I was appointed as HAZOPS secretary of PT Badak NGL for several years in 1988 – 1990s. I was assigned to chair HAZOPS of existing plant in 1993. It took 6 months to finish the project. It was very time consuming but helped my understanding of the design limitations of the plant. I was then promoted to a group head leading three process engineers. However, after about 6 – 7 years of my career as process engineer, I was assigned to Operation as Day Shift Superintendent. This was apparently the end of my career as process engineer and a new career as Operation guy.

Saya ditunjuk sebagai sekretaris HAZOPS PT Badak NGL selama beberapa tahun pada tahun 1988 - 1990-an. Saya ditugaskan untuk memimpin HAZOPS pabrik yang ada pada tahun 1993. Butuh waktu 6 bulan untuk menyelesaikan proyek ini. Memang sangat memakan waktu tetapi membantu pemahaman saya tentang keterbatasan desain pabrik. Saya kemudian dipromosikan menjadi ketua kelompok yang memimpin tiga insinyur proses. Namun, setelah sekitar 6 - 7 tahun karir saya sebagai insinyur proses, saya ditugaskan di departemen Operasi sebagai Pengawas. Ini rupanya akhir dari karir saya sebagai insinyur proses dan awal karir sebagai orang Operation.

Fortunately, I still had opportunity to be a company representative for a debottlenecking project in Houston led by Bechtel Inc. Train-A/B/C/D Debotlenecking Project basically studying opportunity to increase production capacity of Trains-A/B/C/D. Along with other engineers, we worked at Bechtel office in Houston for almost 2 months.

Untungnya, saya masih memiliki kesempatan untuk menjadi perwakilan perusahaan untuk proyek debottlenecking di Houston yang dipimpin oleh Bechtel Inc. Train-A / B / C / D Proyek Debotlenecking pada dasarnya mempelajari peluang untuk meningkatkan kapasitas produksi Train-A / B / C / D . Bersama dengan insinyur lain, kami bekerja di kantor Bechtel di Houston selama hampir 2 bulan.
